Author's site supervision

The designer checking that construction follows the design, and agreeing whether substitute solutions may be used during the build.

Author's supervision is not the same as the client's site inspector or the site manager. The designer does not run the works and does not answer for their quality; they check that what is being built matches the design and decide whether a proposed change is acceptable.

It is billed as a flat fee for the whole build, per visit, or as a monthly retainer. Each model carries a different risk: a flat fee when the build drags on, per-visit pricing with a client who calls every week.

The value of supervision grows with documentation. A note after each visit with the date, who was present and what was agreed settles later disputes and supports the invoice. More in site supervision in practice.
