Access from a public road

The connection between a plot and a public road. Building or rebuilding it requires the road manager's consent, and on higher-category roads it is a separate procedure.

The manager is the municipality, county, region or the national roads authority, depending on the road category. The permission for the location of the access and the technical conditions to be reflected in the site development plan come from them.

The procedure can take longer than the building permit itself, especially on regional and national roads where sight lines and distances from junctions come into play. The application goes in at the start, not after filing the permit application.

A missing access consent, or a design that does not follow its conditions, is among the more frequent reasons a permit application comes back for supplementing.
